Veterans Memorial Park kicked off its renovation of the skatepark with a lively initial meeting last night. About 50 skaters, and parents, came out and shared their ideas for the future of the park.

Asking questions at skatepark meeting

After an initial presentation of three skatepark layouts by ARC, American Ramp Company, the contractor working with the Park Authority to design the park, the crowd tossed around a bunch of ideas. Here’s round-up of the opinions expressed:

  • Install a pool that starts shallow and deepens to accommodate skaters of all skill levels.
  • Some supported landscaping the areas around and inside the skatepark as a way to alleviate stormwater runoff. Others, though, thought that the fallen leaves from trees and brushes would be a nuisance.
  • Keep a vert ramp at Vets. It is what the park is known for.
  • Combine a pool and/or vert ramp with street skating elements to provide something for all skaters

After the presentation, the attendees divided into groups.  Pouring over photos of the park area and icons of options, the skaters designed parks of their own. Most of the finished designs created contained a similar mix: a vert ramp, a pool and a mix of street skating elements.

ARC will draw on those designs to create two specific concepts. The second design meeting will be held in approximately 30 days. At it, ARC will present the designs and solicit feedback on those.

What happens if no body likes what the design is? Will the design process continue?

Jeremiah, the Park Authority will keep working with the skate community and the design contractor to develop a park that appeals to everyone -- and falls within our available budget.
