Rules of Play

Understanding the rules of golf can be both time-consuming and confusing. This page is dedicated to explaining some of basic rules and providing an easier way to understand them.

The USGA is the governing agency for golf played in the United States. The Rules of Golf reads: “Golf is played, for the most part, without supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and to abide by the Rules. All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship and all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be.”

Topic:  Key Points of Frost Delays

  • Simply walking across a golf green covered with frost can cause damage.
  • One foursome can leave several hundred foot prints on each green, the damage can be very extensive.
  • Greens are fragile so they are vulnerable to attacks from insects, disease, heat, drought, cold and frost
  • When frosted, the normal resilient plant cells become brittle and easily crushed.
  • A short delay while the frost melts can preserve the quality of the greens and prevent needless repairs

More often than not you are not actually taught how to “play golf.” The majority of your time is spent at the driving range or the practice green; but how do you actually play golf on the golf course?

Each week you will find a New Category and Examples of proper Etiquette in the game of golf:

·         Safety

o   The golfer should ensure no one is standing around or near them; this includes any practice swings that may be taken. Stones, pebbles, or twigs may be inadvertently hit at one of your playing partners.

o   The golfer should ensure the area in front of them is clear of others

§  Maintenance staff is on the course to ensure you have the best available area to play golf; make sure you alert any maintenance staff in your hitting area to ensure their safety.

o   Fore! If you inadvertently hit a ball towards another person, warn these players by yelling “Fore!
